Words our grandmothers didn’t have
Burnout
Running on empty for too long.
What it means
Burnout comes from chronic stress that isn’t being relieved. The World Health Organization describes three signs: exhaustion, feeling distant or cynical, and feeling less effective. It shows up at work, and in caregiving and motherhood too.
Burnout isn’t fixed by one day off. It’s fixed by changing the load.
What it can look like
- Dreading things you used to enjoy
- Tired even after sleep
- Getting irritated more easily
- Feeling like nothing you do is enough
One thing to try
Choose one thing to drop, delegate or do “good enough” this week. Rest is part of the plan.
Where the term comes from
The World Health Organization includes burnout in its International Classification of Diseases (ICD-11) as an occupational phenomenon.
