Words our grandmothers didn’t have
Code-switching
Changing how you show up to fit in.
What it means
Code-switching means adjusting your speech, style, hair, behavior or expression to fit into spaces where you feel you’ll be judged for being yourself.
It can be a skill and a survival tool. Research also shows it can be draining, because you’re managing how you’re seen all day.
What it can look like
- Changing your voice on work calls
- Thinking twice about your hair before a meeting
- Feeling tired after being “on” all day
- Feeling like two different people
One thing to try
Find one space this week where you don’t have to switch at all. Notice how your body feels there. That’s the version of you worth protecting.
Where the term comes from
Researchers including Dr. Courtney McCluney have studied the costs of code-switching for Black professionals.
